Story
Clarification
As South Park prepares for its annual reenactment of the Boxing of Tamarack Loma, friction builds between Cartman, Stan and Kyle. On the 24-hour interval of the reenactment, Cartman arrives dressed as Amalgamated commander Robert E. Lee. He bets Stan and Kyle (who fight on the Marriage side) that the S will win the war. If he's correct, they take to exist his slaves for a month. If he's wrong, he's their slave.
Every bit the twenty-four hour period goes on, the Amalgamated reenactors become progressively more drunkard on the event'southward booze sponsor, Jagermen's S'More than Flavored Schnapps. Cartman convinces them to beat the Union reenactors for existent, which they do.
At the party after the battle, anybody gets drunk on schnapps. Soon Cartman convinces them to start a binge across North America, capturing city after city -- in spite of the fact that they're just armed with blanks. Kyle and Stan briefly cease the rampage by stealing the alcohol supply, but Cartman manages to secure more. Shortly everyone is drunk over again and the onslaught continues.
The reenactment troops take Washington, D.C. and forcefulness President Bill Clinton to permit the South to form its ain nation, effectively "winning" the Ceremonious State of war. But at the final moment Kyle and Stan, dressed every bit Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis, reenact the real surrender of the South. The army of drunken pretend soldiers promptly go away.

Behind The Scenes
When Mary Kay Bergman, who voiced for nearly all of South Park'south female characters, died unexpectedly, this episode had to be written to non involve whatever female characters. Out of respect for Bergman, the South Park staff did not feel like hiring replacements right away. The simply female characters to make an appearance this episode are the Jagermen'due south S'More Schnapps spokesmodel and the schoolteacher in Topeka, both voiced by Trey, and Kenny'southward mom who doesn't speak.
Where Did The Idea Come up From
The episode's title is a play on the Civil War novel The Crimson Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane.
Matt and Trey noticed people take American Civil War reenactments very seriously, events they personally feel indifferent towards. This episode was as well a little bit inspired past the 1993 war film Gettysburg which Matt and Trey panned for beingness dumb and as well long.

Pointless Observations
- This episode began the change in Cartman's vocalization, especially during the bulk of the episode where he speaks using a Southern accent. Trey notes that he couldn't drop the Southern emphasis later on, which helped develop Cartman'southward current accent.
- When the boys pull off Cartman's fake Civil War beard, his scream of hurting is heard on the planet Marklar, which we offset see in "Starvin' Marvin in Space".
- Former Vice President Al Gore has a minor function in this episode with a very different appearance. He becomes more significant and is ridiculed in subsequent episodes like "ManBearPig" and "Imaginationland, Episode Three".
- Afterward Kenny is killed, Grandpa Marsh says "You lot bastards!" instead of Kyle.
